Comic Book Easter Eggs – The Sound Effects of Norman Osborn’s Mind!
Every week, I will be sharing with you three comic book “easter eggs.” An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ‘em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far! This week, all the legends come from Dark X-Men by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk!

In Dark X-Men #5, the battle takes place inside of Norman Osborn’s mind. Appropriately enough, then, the sound effects all relate to the mind.
From Sigmund Freud…
to Carl Jung…
to the Rorschach test…
to Mr. Spock and/or Dr. Spock (I don’t know who is being referenced by Cornell)…
Cool stuff.
Travis also wanted to note that for each of the first four issues of the series, writer Paul Cornell used little captions to describe each character in the book (something that Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction originated during their Uncanny X-Men run) only Cornell also added a song to describe each character. He chose to use four British bands/artists.
In #1, the Beatles…
in #2, the Rolling Stones…
In #4, David Bowie…
and in #3, well, this is SLIGHTLY less obvious than the other three, so I’ll let you all figure it out for yourself which band/artist is being referenced here…

I think you mean Dr. Spock, not Mr. Spock.
Dr. Benjamin Spock was a prominent pyschologist. Mr. Spock is a character from Star Trek.

I figured Mr. Spock’s mind-meld was even more famous among comic fans than Dr. Spock’s psychoanalysis (and I admit, it seemed kind of weird to have Dr. Spock put into the same grouping as Freud and Jung).
But fair enough, you’re probably right!
